Massage and Stress

Just about any type of massage therapy can be referred to as stress relief massage.  In general, massage helps soothe the nervous system.  It slows the heart rate and causes your breathing to deepen and slow down.  It loosens tight muscles helping you to relax.  Most importantly it decreases the amount of cortisol your body releases.  Positive human touch can have a profoundly relaxing effect.

Massage also provides you with quiet time to relax.  Most places where you receive a massage are dimly lit with relaxing music playing.  Many people wouldn't have this type of quiet time in their lives at all if they didn't take time out to get a massage.
